Video of the day -- Mars, the reality

Perchlorates are also lethal to Earthly soil bacteria, without which Earthly plants of any kind cannot grow.  This seems to rule out ever establishing agriculture there -- thus making permanent colonization impossible.

I loved that!

You may already be aware of a fun fact regarding Biosphere II: the second mission in 1994 was "managed" by one Steve Bannon and ended in a colossal shitshow of a lawsuit, etc. In fact, you might say Bannon's "management" was the perchlorate of Biosphere II!

Hackwhacker: Oh, that's too good. I'll have to look it up and read the full story.

Glad you liked the video!

I wonder if ankle weights would help with the weight and gravity issue on Mars.

Poo vs. perchlorates? Bet on the polysyllabic.

Weights might help somewhat. I'm not sure if the problems come from just inadequate load on the muscles vs. the whole internal system being under low gravity. And the ankle weights would have to be pretty big to make up for a 2/3 reduction of body weight.

I should probably post this video and the Bill Maher Earth Day video as counterpoints to my regular Elon Musk boosterism. As for Steve Bannon managing Biosphere II, that's hilarious. I use Biosphere II in my classes as an example of failing to take all variables into account and having Bannon mismanage it would be the cherry on top.
