The empire strikes back

The wingnut civil war is escalating with Mitt Romney leading a new establishment counter-offensive against Trump.  His 17-minute speech lays out the case against Trump in surprisingly blunt language, point by point.

This is aimed at on-the-fence Republicans who might be considering The Donald, not at the hard-core Trumpolines (who are probably unreachable at this point).  But neither camp can claim they weren't warned.

Race42016 has comments by a range of rank-and-file Republicans.  Horizons observes that Romney, despite his dignified delivery (a striking contrast with Trump) is perhaps not the best person to deliver this message.  You Might Notice a Trend concurs, and offers suggestions for what the Republicans really should be doing if they want to stop Trump.

I tend to agree that while Romney's attack will give anti-Trump Republicans a rallying point, it won't slow Trump's march toward the nomination very much -- the forces Trump has unleashed can no longer be stopped.  But it's a cornucopia of material for Hillary to use against him in the general, despite Romney's unfair digression against her in the speech.  Never before has a party's presumptive Presidential nominee been attacked like this by one of the most important leaders of his own party.

True. But never before has a major political party considered a "Vulgar Talking Yam" as its presidential nominee.

It was odd to hear Romney mock Trump about his inherited wealth and Trump's trashing of minorities -- he of the 47% loser fame. But then nothing surprises me in this election cycle. Trump supporters are determined to have their kook and love everything unAmerican that he promises them.

My father, who grew up in Mussolini's Italy, told me when I was a teen that every country harbors within its borders its own nest of fascistic vipers, and I remember hearing him say don't be surprised if it happens here. I'm glad he's not here to see those words come true.

About last night. After little Rubio and Donald discussed the size of Donald's hands and penis and Cruz had a piece of vitriol stuck on his lip, I never stopped laughing. Romney just added to the entertainment.

Too little, too late, Rmoney.

This cake is baked. May they all choke on the taste of ash.

Shaw: Very true. It's difficult for Pomney, or the Republican party in general, to make a clean break with Trump because they all show the same tendencies. He just manifests them in a cruder and more extreme form.

I must say that given your father's experience, I would be very interested in his insights about Trump if he were indeed still here.

Jono: Every time I think that mess has gotten as ridiculous as it possibly can, it gets worse. Choosing the President of the United States now involves arguing about Donald Trump's dick size? Other countries must think we've gone insane.

Comrade: Amen to that!

Trump will have the delegates he needs before the end of this month.
The Chicken Little's who were saying Bush was Hitler were just crying wolf. Now, when a real fascist is close to being president, the Hitler call is being ignored. So much for the idiots who banned me from their blogs for chastising them for calling Bush a Hitler. But there are no liberal extremists, right.

Bush was no Hitler, but the adoption of the use of torture against prisoners has created a similar stain on the name of the United States.

I suppose there are "liberal extremists", but they never get anywhere near the Democratic nomination.

Bernie is a liberal extremist since he calls himself a socialist, which is on the extremist line of liberal.

Oh, nonsense. Socialism is a thoroughly mainstream ideology in most of the world and most of Bernie's actual policy position have mainstream -- in some cases majority -- support among the US public.

You're probably one of those people who thinks socialism and communism are more or less the same thing.

Also, some people need to read the comments policy, especially point 4.
