Link round-up for 28 December 2014

Neil deGrasse Tyson celebrates Christmas.

Don't get mad, get even.

Christmas lights? These are Christmas lights.

Right-wing headline of the year.

It's too bad they made him take this down (found via Mendip) -- it looks a lot more original and creative than routine nativity scenes.

Lady Atheist has a roundup of reviews of one of those godawful God movies.

A "Catholic warrior" wants to deny other religions the recognition Christianity claims for itself.

John Lennon is still freaking out the pearl-clutchers.

When somebody starts rhapsodizing about "faith", expect a deluge of horseshit.

The SPLC reviews the year in hate (found via Politics Plus).

They needed to handcuff a 4-year-old?

Green Eagle has another Wingnut Wrapup and a side order of total lunacy.

Need a job?  Don't mention religion.

The South moves to strengthen its power within the Republican party.

Talk about gays, but don't include them in the conversation.

Talk about women, but don't include them in the conversation.

A majority of the British, however slight, want out of the EU.

Berlin has changed.  Not everyone approves.

Achieving sexual liberation takes more than just rejecting religion.

ISIS's mass enslavement of Yezidi women is driving them to suicide.

Latest Erdoğan wingnuttery:  birth control is treason.  Unsurprisingly, he doesn't like the internet much.

Never forget, never forgive.

The world's biggest car company gets on the non-fossil-fuel bandwagon.

Oh yeah?  Well, you're a fat little racist. Have another internet blackout.

A well-preserved fossil fish shows us how highly evolved the eye had become even 300 million years ago.

On balance, it's been one of the best years ever.

As for the Guardian article on the legally dead Irish woman being used as an incubator, a "Dune" reference comes to mind: axlotl tanks. Reducing women to incubators is dehumanizing.

I'm heading over to the Lady Atheist link to check out the reviews of "God's Not Dead". Thanks!

"On this day long ago, a child was born who, by age 30, would transform the world. Happy Birthday Isaac Newton b. Dec 25, 1642"

Loved this for a few reasons. I know N.D.T.'s hero is Newton, and I've heard him say this:

Asked “Who is the Greatest Physicist in History,” he responds, Isaac Newton, without any hesitation. Newton discovered the laws of optics, proving that white light is actually made up of colors, the colors of the rainbow. He mapped out his three laws of motion and the universal laws of gravitation. And then he invented differential and integral calculus to explain why planets orbit in an elliptical fashion. Now get ready for the kicker. This all happened before Newtown turned 26. That, my friends, is what genius looks like.

And the December 25 birthday of the great Newton must stick in the craw of people who believe Jesus was born on that day (we know he wasn't).

Newton did more to change the world--the whole world--than did the other guy.

Happy 2015 to you, Infidel753!

I hate that the evangelicals are ignorant about philosophy. There is no philosophy classroom on earth where the teacher will have the students making definitive statements. Even if the teachers believe it themselves. There isn't a philosophy professor alive that will lose a debate about religion to a god bothering freshman. That Phd is a little more than a piece of paper.

It also bothers me that evangelicals don't study the history. If they did, they'd know that some of our greatest minds used philosophy to justify their faith.

Their movies showcase zero understanding of people that are different from themselves. It looks as if they're incapable of self reflection and empathy. If they wanted to make a real movie they'd make one about someone walking away. That's a drama right there.

Woody: And the guy was serious, too.....

Ahab: And if they can reduce a dead woman to a mere utensil, they can create a precedent for doing the same to the live ones.

Shaw: Pretty much anyone who knows physics would acknowledge Newton as the most important scientist in history. Even though he was religious himself, he helped to make the modern world possible.

Vic78: I'm often struck by how the fundies and the far right in general don't understand, and don't want to understand, their opponents -- they cling to the caricatures they carry around inside their heads. It's a real weakness. I read right-wing sites as much as I do because I want to be sure I understand the enemy accurately.

Blurber: Turning over in his grave, probably.
