Video of the week -- Pat Condell speaks for me

This has been in the links list for months, but I want to make sure that everyone sees it! A book of transcripts of Condell's videos is available here.

The deference to religion Condell speaks of in this vid is what gave the Catholic Church the idea that it could allow its priests to commit crimes against humanity (raping children is a crime against humanity) and get away with it.

And not to bash one religion without giving equal bashing to another--the same sort of deference to religion allows Islam to dehumanize women and encourage the most devout to kill innocents in the name of Allah.

It's all a monsterous scheme to allow delusional old men to make their "sheep" suffer for their ignorance.

Douglas Adams said this about the "deference" to religion:

"It's rather like, if you think back in terms of animal evolution, an animal that's grown an incredible carapace around it, such as a tortoise—that's a great survival strategy because nothing can get through it; or maybe like a poisonous fish that nothing will come close to, which therefore thrives by keeping away any challenges to what it is. In the case of an idea, if we think 'Here is an idea that is protected by holiness or sanctity', what does it mean? Why should it be that it's perfectly legitimate to support the Labour party or the Conservative party, Republicans or Democrats, this model of economics versus that, Macintosh instead of Windows, but to have an opinion about how the Universe began, about who created the Universe, no, that's holy? What does that mean? Why do we ring-fence that for any other reason other than that we've just got used to doing so? There's no other reason at all, it's just one of those things that crept into being and once that loop gets going it's very, very powerful. So, we are used to not challenging religious ideas but it's very interesting how much of a furore Richard [Dawkins] creates when he does it! Everybody gets absolutely frantic about it because you're not allowed to say these things. Yet when you look at it rationally there is no reason why those ideas shouldn't be as open to debate as any other, except that we have agreed somehow between us that they shouldn't be."

Good Morning Mr.Infidel!

I first heard of this gent through you, and I admire him, because I think he is a decent man, and somewhat put's his neck on the line. I am sure he is hated by some, because of his "frankness" on these issue's.Put it this way .... if I had a "choice" of neighbor's, between someone like him or a fundamoralist, or some f'n raghead .... give me the atheist any day.

BTW .... your last link round up was funny on the goat cornholer fella down in Spring(TX).

Later Guy ...........

One Fly: When Pat Condell kicks an ass, it stays kicked!

Shaw: Too true. The deference to Islam is all the worse since it's backed up by political correctness. Great quote.

Ranch Chimp: He's a sensible guy -- people are only shocked because he tells the unvarnished truth.

Nothing is more frustrating then hearing & reading the dogmatic crap that religious commentators, i.e. preachers etc...spew on television, radio, & in newspapers, and not being able to speak out against or contradict it.
One of the preachers that writes for our scared page wanted to write her column under a pen name. Our editor said absolutely not. Besides it not being policy, she told her if she couldn't stand behind what she wrote she shouldn't write it.
Reading the drivel that she does write under her own name, makes me wonder what she would say if she could say it anonymously.
This week we got a letter to the editor that challenges the sacred pages(& above preachers)self aggrandizing tone.
Letters like these are a small splash in the pond, but in a rural politically conservative town of 4,000+ with 22 churches, it is an encouraging sign. Thanks to courageous people outing pedophile priests and hate mongering religious fundamentalists...the cat is out of the bag...Have you ever tried to stuff a cat back in a bag, once it's out? ;)
Great Video!

our scared page

Heh.....That's how I tend to read it in the paper. The homilies usually seem fairly bland, though. I don't know what your preacher is scared of. Maybe she wants to write "in tongues"?:-)

Christopher Hitchens has said that when he travels to small towns in places like the South, everyone who comes to see him is amazed at the turnout because each person thought they were the only atheist in town. There are more of us everywhere than anyone realizes.

I'll be interested to see that letter.

Have you ever tried to stuff a cat back in a bag, once it's out?

We may be even more dangerous that that.:-)
